Blog:

A successful experience I had managing someone else was earlier this year when I took my “mentee” and a team of adventure-philanthropists to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro to brainstorm ideas for new social ventures. Here’s the story I wrote about it:

Tanzania, Africa, 2010:

As the New Year ushered in a fresh decade, four adventure-philanthropists climbed under the light of a blue moon in the shadows of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Led by Everest summiter & filmmaker Scott Mortensen, the core team included Brian Bagnuolo, Michelle Lorusso, & Jen DeMattia. The mission was not merely to reach the roof of Africa but to explore new ways to better the world one community at a time. Days after their successful ascent they chanced upon a precious gemstone called Tanzanite – one thousand times more rare than diamond & known to exist only in the Merelani Hills around Mt. Kilimanjaro. An elaborate cross-cultural collaboration soon followed. As the 3.51 carat Tanzanite gem changed hands & crossed borders between Africa, London and Beverly Hills the purpose of the movement became clear:
Give friends the opportunity to invest in sustainable, social change.

This expedition was successful because we came up with a neat way to fund-raise for lasting social ventures in Roatan, Honduras. Plus, we had the experience of a lifetime making it happen.

668 WIKI

Identify opportunity for change and those participating in the project. Post to wiki. Due: 5/17

I will redesign the website for www.pandytown.com, a community off the Bay Islands of Honduras in hopes to build collaborative momentum for upcoming humanitarian endeavors. The current website is a static Wordpress blog that will be transformed into a video-centric, collaborative forum for change. The participants will be composed of a cross-cultural collaboration between indigenous Bay Islanders, philanthropists, students, and concerned individuals.

Write a one-page summary of the opportunity for change and the impact it will have on the setting within which it will take place. Post to wiki. Due: 5/24

The Change Project: My desire is to use technology to strengthen collaboration among core members of the Pandytown Project, a global, humanitarian endeavor physically located in Roatan, Honduras. Presently, I would like to transform the static website–www.pandytown.com, into an interactive, video blogging network. Assuming engaging content can be created, this “social broadcast” would strengthen our collaboration across a geographically dispersed community of practice and help expand our constituency through diverse communication technologies (i.e. exchanged text, photos, & webisodes).

The ChallengeAlthough we are “not required to actually attempt to implement the change in our setting” I spent three days fine tuning a PHP Wordpress Video blog template to “foster, enable, inspire, implement and manage this change.” Since the old website was also built on a Wordpress platform the existing blogs were archived and are still accessible. This was fortunate because this work represents our initial history as an emerging online community. However, now that a better technology for change is successfully in place, I will move into the second stage of our design process.

Understanding the Learning Context.

Specifically, what is our mission and objectives? How do I know? Do our members agree? How can this online forum communicate our vision to others? During the last week, I have conducted numerous film interviews in an attempt to answer these questions. Using a phenomenological approach to analyzing the recorded data, I believe our group objectives echo what Daniel Pink states in Drive. People desire autonomy, mastery and purpose in their work. Our humanitarian endeavors in Roatan are no exception. Here is one example of how my interview analysis reflects these truths: Data Analysis 638D from Pepperdine Malt on Vimeo.

In closing, this Change Project compliments my Action Research. The building of this video blog can be seen as further evolution of my second cycle. However, now that the new website is in place, the real challenge begins. I must plan, act and reflect on the group content, structure and learning. I already know, “Who is involved and/or affected by the change?” –the core members of the Pandytown Project are. But now we must utilize this platform to involve and affect many others if we hope to succeed in our endeavors. Specifically, how will this interactive forum help accomplish these goals:

Finish construction on the fresh water well

Usher and steward new learning technologies for the Pandytown Youth Center

Empower local women through sustainable micro-enterprise.

I look forward to exploring how this Change Project can generate new opportunities for learning, growth, and leadership for the Pandytown Community and its global constituency.

Evaluate the learning context of the change. What learning will need to take place and by whom? How will you address the learning needs and challenges? Post summary (in any clear format- perhaps bulleted, mind-mapped, scheduled, outlined, etc) to wiki. Due: 5/31

As I work to introduce digital tools and spread the Bay Islanders story it is clear that we must not only equip the townships with technology but coach interested members on best practices in using it. The following areas indicate the learning needs and challenges. Much of the learning is self-determined after simple encouragement and brief one-on-one instruction:

Film/video

Music production

Social networking

Blogs

Youtube/Vimeo

Identify the resources needs for the change. Make list of resources that includes description, value to the project and approximate cost (this list will include people). Post to wiki. Due: 6/7

The resources involve small investments from a large pool of human capital. This is the way Invisible Children became such an effective movement for social change in Uganda. It doesn’t take much. Just a consolidated awareness. As Margaret Mead says, “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Otherwise the cost of servers/web site hosting and such is not extravagant. I would however, like to save a couple thousand to actually travel to Roatan at the end of July.

Craft an initial timeline & project plan for to leading and implementing the change. Post project plan/timeline to wiki. Due: 6/21

Taken from Future of Management:

Challenge 1 – Creating a democracy of ideas
Challenge 2 – Amplifying human imagination
Challenge 3 – Dynamically reallocating resources
Challenge 4 – Aggregating collective wisdom
Challenge 5 – Minimizing the drag of old mental models
Challenge 6 – Giving everyone a chance to opt in

Rules for Innovative Management/Leadership

To solve a systemic problem, you need to understand its systemic roots

At least initially, it’s easier, and safer, to supplement an existing management process than supplant it (Run the new in parallel with the old)

Commit to revolutionary goals, but take evolutionary steps

Be clear about the performance metrics your innovation is designed to improve

Start by experimenting in your “own back yard” where the political risks are the lowest

Whenever possible rely on volunteers

Diffuse potential objections by keeping experiments fun and informal

Iterate: Experiment, learn, experiment, learn

Don’t give up, innovators are persistent

For the first time since the dawning of the industrial age, the only way to
build a company that’s fit for the future is to build one that’s fit for human
beings as well. This is your opportunity – to build a 21st century
management model that truly elicits, honors, and cherishes human
initiative, creativity, and passion – these tender, essential ingredients for
business success in this new millennium.

Blog:

Martin Luther King Jr. seemed like a great manager. Actually, he was more of a leader. But managing the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Sanitation Worker's strike, the freedom rides, the Birmingham campaign, the March on Washington, the Selma march, the Chicago campaign and the Memphis boycott must have necessitated massive managerial skills. What made MLK Jr. great is that he infused his leadership style and managerial skills with civil disobedience and passive resistance expressed by Thoreau, Tolstoy, and Gandhi. This was a bold maneuver in a time when much momentum was shifting towards militant black power movements. King's non-violent tactics were put to the test and yet he stuck to his guns - or more specifically lack thereof. The opposing forces of racism and prejudice that were embodied in local police, mayors, governors, angry citizens, and Ku Klux Klan proved no match for his lasting vision of justice and harmony.

I guess this tells me to stick to my vision for change regardless of the socio-economic momentum of our day. What is noble, true and right will prevail if people are courageous enough to commit the movement.

I’ve heard it said that managers take people where they want to go while leaders take people where they need to go. I’ve thought this was an interesting distinguishment. But does it really matter? I don’t think so. I think a janitor could be a leader given the opportunity. Leadership is an intrinsic gift, not an external circumstance. That said, here are the challenges for innovative management:

Challenge 1 – Creating a democracy of ideas
Challenge 2 – Amplifying human imagination
Challenge 5 – Minimizing the drag of old mental models
Challenge 6 – Giving everyone a chance to opt in

Particularly useful are the examples of Gore, Whole Foods and Google whose founders ignored business school dogma to invent a modular, relevant future for their organizational vision.

The goal of my Action Research is to integrate collaborative learning technologies for humanitarian objectives among my community of practice.

   1. Globally, accelerate the rate of change for humanitarian issues such as oppression of women, education of children and health & wellness initiatives.
2. Locally, increase my ability as a humanitarian/filmmaker by implementing and utilizing learning technologies in my community of practice.
3. Specifically, evolve my expertise in media technologies such as Video Internet, WordPress Vlogging, HD/DSLR movie-making, & SEO.

MY WORK/COMMUNITY CONTEXT:

The community context for this Action Research is rooted in a constituency of humanitarians, entrepreneurs and media specialists who collectively pursue humanitarian endeavors. Field research location is in Pandytown, Honduras—a microcosm island community ideal for data collection, research, and implementation of various cycles. Other simultaneous locales include Thousand Oaks, CA; Tanzania, Africa; and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Lit review:

Cycle 2:

Literature Review Excerpt:

“Though I have been involved in philanthropy for over twenty years this last one is the first Iʼve discovered the model of social entrepreneurship. I believe that this method of change is the opportunity that many of us have been looking for. A more peaceful, just and sustainable planet is in everybodyʼs best interest. Social entrepreneurship provides a valuable framework for applying the ingenuity and innovation necessary to accomplish these goals and fundamentally change the world.”

RESEARCH QUESTION:

How can the development of an interactive video blogging website enhance real-world humanitarian initiatives and increase group collaboration across a geographically distributed community of practice?

Post project plan/timeline to wiki.

Motivation translates into technology design and success based on what aspect of the human spirit is to be reflected by the technology. Facebook for example, was successful because it is a reflection of the human spirit for community. Wikipedia, a reflection of the human spirit for sharing intellect through generous collaboration. Google is a reflection of our endless quest for knowledge. So we should remember this when examining our motivations for designing successful technology. What aspects of the human spirit do we wish do reflect, amplify and/or proliferate? Instead of succumbing to tunnel vision around specifications or functions, we should remember the big picture reflection of the human spirit to design successful technology.

To this end, I found A Whole New Mind helpful. Pink’s “six senses” discourse outlines how design is an asset above function. Story is an asset above argument. Symphony is an asset above focus. Empathy is an asset above logic. Play is an asset above seriousness, and meaning is an asset above accumulation.

Portfolio Activity: Identify the key organizations you should participate in (or already are) and list in your portfolio. Each should have a brief, one sentence description and/or link to organization website.

Project Activity: Identify the resources needs for the change. Make list of resources that includes description, value to the project and approximate cost (this list will include people). Post to wiki.
Due: 6/7

The tools in the Drive Toolkit that interested me were not in the Drive Toolkit but taken from Pink’s A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future. I read the latter after reading Drive and thought it had some excellent resources for motivating myself and others. The Toolkit’s ntrinsic motivation is important but still, we must ask ourselves WHY we seek change before we try to discern HOW. To this end, I thought A Whole New Mind was an excellent resource. According to Pink, Abundance, Asia, and Automation has decreased the need for L-directed thinkers (left brain knowledge workers who excel at standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT). So the challenge for the future change makers is to harness our right brain creativity and become innovative designers, empathizers, and playmakers. In the Conceptual Age jobs will require “care, humor, imagination, ingenuity, instinct, joyfulness, personal rapport, and social dexterity.” Once we understand why we should be motivated for change how becomes the easy part.

Here’s a pretty harsh review I read about Pink’s Drive. It’s good having an opposing viewpoint even if this author seems a bit too critical:

BLOG:

I think the real question is who isn’t impacted by change? The whole reason I’m working with my friends in Pandytown is because rapid globalization has changed their culture with devastating effects. Privatization and western notions of Real Estate law has changed where they can hunt and gather food on the islands that once sustained them. Tourist home/hotel construction has led to more roads and an increased watershed that threatens the barrier reef. Cruise ships now visit the island and their related economy has caused an influx of Honduran mainlanders whose culture is very different than the Bay Islanders. The change equates to few opportunities for work and education. Meanwhile threats from drugs and disease continue to escalate. The pristine Bay Island culture must adapt and overcome or end up extinct.
These are the characteristics of the underlying change and by understanding the big picture problem we may take steps to create more effective opportunities for growth.
My role in this process is small but nonetheless, important.

The Challenge: Although we are “not required to actually attempt to implement the change in our setting” I spent three days fine tuning a PHP Wordpress Video blog template to “foster, enable, inspire, implement and manage this change.” Since the old website was also built on a Wordpress platform the existing blogs were archived and are still accessible.

Here is one example of how my interview analysis reflects these truths:Data Analysis 638D from Pepperdine Malt on Vimeo.
